Hy-Vee walks away with the Golden Plunger award for its support for Crohn's and Colitis research.
Hy-Vee employees walked for a good cause, then walked away with the Golden Plunger award after being named Top Fundraising Team for the Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis Walk on June 24. The Omaha and Council Bluffs-area Hy-Vee stores raised $25,000 for the cause.
A bright and sunny day greeted more than 100 Hy-Vee employees and family members as they walked at Chalco Hills in Omaha, Nebraska. The walk is one of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s largest events committed to finding cures for digestive diseases.
Most of Team Hy-Vee’s fundraising efforts for the walk took place in May but continued through June. The stores donated 5 cents from the sale of every 12-count bakery fresh cookies, 25 cents from the sale of every Di Lusso salad and 25 cents for each “Just Because” bouquet to the foundation. They also hosted fundraising dinners in the Hy-Vee Market Grilles and collected donations at the registers. The 156th and Maple Hy-Vee store hosts a car show each summer that benefits the cause.
“The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is thankful for Hy-Vee’s support and for helping our organization connect with the larger community,” said Aaron Castens, executive director for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. “Hy-Vee is a great partner and is helping to change the future for all those living with digestive disease in our community.”
The day of the Take Steps walk, Hy-Vee grilled hot dogs and provided turkey sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies, milk and water to the more than 825 walkers. Hy-Vee dietitians also were on hand to talk with participants.
