Angela Oberlander, a courtesy clerk at the Windsor Heights, Iowa, Hy-Vee store, took home the gold medal in the downhill skiing event at the Special Olympics held January 8 and 9 in Dubuque at Sundown Mountain.
While Oberlander was excited, the big win came as no surprise to everyone else. She already has 11 gold medals from previous skiing competitions.
Oberlander has been competing since 2009, but her first time skiing was more than 20 years ago when she was just a little girl. When she started with Hy-Vee in 2009 through Goodwill, her goal was to save up her earnings to buy her own skiing equipment. And that she did. Her first major purchase included her very own boots and skis.
Oberlander says her favorite thing about participating in the Special Olympics is that it feels like a reunion with all her friends, while enjoying pool parties and getting to stay in a hotel.
