In the spirit of the season, 120 corporate office employees, along with family members and friends, spent their Saturday morning volunteering at the Meals from the Heartland warehouse in West Des Moines on December 16. The group packaged 45,000 meals in less than three hours.
Meals from the Heartland is a nonprofit organization composed of volunteers who package meals for delivery to starving people around the world, including those in Central Iowa. The packaged meals contain rice, soy, protein and dried vegetables; each bag costs about 20 cents and provides for six meals.
“Meals from the Heartland invited our office to participate in the meal-packaging volunteer effort, and I was so very pleased with the response and to witness the Hy-Vee giving spirit in action,” said Brad Waller, assistant vice president of community relations. “It was a fun Saturday morning for all and an educational experience as well, including for the younger children, whose eyes were opened that hunger is an issue with kids right here in Central Iowa.”
Meals from the Heartland exceeded expectations in 2017 and packaged more than 22 million meals. Learn more about the organization here.
