Donuts At The Front Door
A Galesburg mom was surprised when Hy-Vee showed up with donuts.
As a way to build word of mouth about Hy-Vee’s new fresh fried donuts, many stores offer giveaways to local businesses.
On their Facebook pages in July, the Galesburg, Illinois, Hy-Vee stores invited followers to post their place of work as a potential spot to drop off a dozen fresh donuts.
One customer, Erica Baumgardner, replied that she’d like a dozen. She posted: “Could you deliver some to a stay-at-home mom? I’m working hard over here, too.”
“We planned the giveaway for traditional ‘9 to 5’ businesses, but when I saw Erica’s comment on our post, I knew we had to drop her off some donuts,” said Christina Landon, marketing coordinator for the Galesburg Hy-Vee stores. “I did some investigating and found her address. We surprised her with donuts for her and her family.”
The Galesburg stores delivered donuts to more than 15 other businesses, too. But Baumgardner’s surprised and excited reaction was a favorite among employees. Landon delivered the donuts with a coworker, and when Baumgardner opened the door, she looked at them and started laughing.
“I was completely caught off-guard! It totally made our morning,” Baumgardner said. “The donuts were delicious.”
Landon said the effort behind the surprise was worth it.
“Moms, especially stay-at-home moms, often get overlooked for all the hard work they put in raising little ones. I wanted Erica to know that her hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and that we appreciate her,” Landon said. “She was truly appreciative as she thanked us in person and on Facebook.”
