Michaela Pattrin of the Omaha Applewood Hy-Vee became the company’s second 2017 Starbucks barista champion by winning a regional competition Wednesday in Kansas City.
Pattrin defeated nine other baristas from licensed Starbucks stores from around the Great Plains Region. She had advanced to the final round by winning area contests against other Hy-Vee baristas.
Jaelynn Garry of the Mankato, Minnesota, Hilltop Hy-Vee, earlier this month won Starbucks’ Midwest Region title. Competitors are judged on the taste and presentation of their caramel macchiato, latte and cappuccino, as well as on cleanliness and customer service. The regional battles covered even more drinks and required baristas to narrate the making of their favorite customer’s drink of choice.
Pattrin was also named her region’s Throwdown Champion for exceptional artistry.
Andy Reed, Hy-Vee’s wine and spirits/coffee supervisor for Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri, said Hy-Vee hopes to name the company’s top overall barista next year through an additional round of competition matching area winners.
