Whenever you’re in trouble, Hy-Vee is likely to step up and help.
In late 2017, the Brookings, South Dakota, Regional Humane Society posted on the organization’s Facebook page that it is facing financial hardship and is unsure of how long it would be able to remain open. The first comment on that post was from the Brookings Hy-Vee.
In an effort to help, the Brookings Hy-Vee team quickly organized a fundraiser to benefit the humane society. The bakery whipped up some themed cupcakes, designed to look like cute kittens and puppies. For every bakery item sold, the store donated 25 cents.
On the front end of the store, customers had the chance to purchase a “paw print” donation at the register for $1.
“In just a short amount of time, our store and our customers stepped up and helped raise just under $2,500 for the Brookings Regional Humane Society,” said Kayla Aman, dietitian at the Brookings Hy-Vee.
On January 5, Brookings employees Tom Shamp and Michaela Gloden presented the check to the Brookings Regional Humane Society.
“The support we’ve received from Hy-Vee and from the community has been incredible,” said Maia Moore, executive director of the Brookings Regional Humane Society. “Our expenses continue to increase while donations were staying the same. Our call for help was answered and we are looking at a fantastic 2018.”
