One customer at each of the Omaha and Council Bluffs Hy-Vee stores received a big surprise in the checkout lanes in December. The Omaha-area Hy-Vee stores partnered with local Fox 42 News to help people “Savor the Season” by paying for their entire grocery order.
The promotion was kept secret until the stories aired on Fox 42, in an effort to keep the experience a surprise. This is the third year for Savor the Season.
The Papillion winner, Raechell, later sent FOX 42 a thank-you card. It reads, in part:
“My daughter told me, ‘Pay it forward, Mom!’ so I purchased several gift certificates from Hy-Vee, and I will give them to families I know are more in need than I am. I work with families of fallen military, so they will be the beneficiaries of your kindness.”
The stores matched the customers’ order totals and donated that same amount – Omaha store funds benefited St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, while Council Bluff store funds benefited the Micah House charity. Donations were made in the winning customers’ names.
