Hy-Vee Store Directors Spend Time Giving The Basics; “Love In A Tub” Added To Effort
Kansas City-area Hy-Vee store directors donated their time to Giving the Basics on January 23. Hy-Vee’s partnership with Giving the Basics began two years ago.
The effort continues at a handful of Hy-Vee stores in February, as a local plumbing service “installs” bathtubs in-store to draw attention to the cause. Customers can purchase personal hygiene items to be donated to Giving the Basics and place them in the bathtubs. The display hopes to communicate that Giving the Basics isn’t collecting food but, instead, hygiene products.
“Through our partnership with Giving the Basics, we are able to impact our community in a way that’s often forgotten,” said Shelby Summerville, marketing coordinator for the Kansas City-area Hy-Vee stores. “Lots of people in need get food assistance, but personal hygiene items aren’t often top of mind. That’s where this organization comes in. We’re helping people in our community get the items they need to improve their confidence.”
Giving the Basics is a Kansas City charity dedicated to providing basic human dignity products to local agencies, shelters and school districts. The goal is for children to avoid the alienation that often comes with poor hygiene, and to help the homeless of all ages have a better chance for employment and acceptance. The organization currently serves more than 220,000 people per month and distributes more than 2 million personal hygiene products each year.
Hy-Vee has provided pallets of product at cost for necessities such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper and other personal care hygiene products.
