The Waverly, Iowa, Hy-Vee raised $5,000 for the Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools’ Booster Club.
A portion of sales from fresh pizza, buckets of fried chicken and cookies from the bakery comprised the donation, and the fundraising effort was heavily promoted on Facebook and in the store.
Store Director Jason Busswitz presented the check at the undefeated Go-Hawks’ 45-7 homecoming victory over Benton-Van Horne. Homecoming week was marked by a week of fresh breakfast and fried donuts for teachers and other employees at the district’s eight schools.
“The booster club was not aware of the large donation they would be receiving, which made this check presentation during half-time very exciting,” Busswitz said. “I was very impressed with the amount of support from the families; $5,000 will go a long way in a small community.”
